In quel continuo sistemare, preservare, proteggere, si nasconde un segreto profondo, forse un’assenza mai accettata, forse la paura che, spostando anche solo un oggetto, qualcosa possa definitivamente svanire. E forse nemmeno lei è del tutto consapevole che, nel custodire la casa, sta in realtà tentando di custodire il passato, di trattenerlo tra le mani per non lasciarlo andare via.
An elderly widow spends her days in the quiet of her elegant home. She devotes herself to its furnishings with meticulous attention, as if the furniture and objects were living presences. The scrupulous care she gives to the rooms is not merely a love of order or aesthetics; it is a necessary gesture, almost vital. In that constant arranging, preserving, protecting, a deep secret lies hidden, perhaps an absence never truly accepted, perhaps the fear that by moving even a single object, something might vanish forever.
And perhaps she herself is not entirely aware that, in safeguarding the house, she is in fact trying to safeguard the past, to hold it in her hands so as not to let it slip away.
